about
Ever since I was a child on our first family trip to Hawaii, I have been intrigued by banyan trees. A member of the fig (Ficas) family, this tree sends out its long horizontal limbs, and from these limbs drop aerial prop roots to the ground. I loved climbing these trees, swinging from its roots, imagining myself to be a jungle boy.
Over time these roots manage to take hold, rooting into the earth and slowly growing into additional buttresses expanding laterally to become enormous grove-like single trees, spanning large areas.
There is one particularly distinguished tree centrally located in Lahaina, Maui that I became quite familiar with while living there. It is a familiar meeting place as it provides a large area of shade in a central park-like setting.
I became enamored by the romantic notion that this has been a perennial meeting place for generations. I could imagine loved ones excitedly watching tall-ships approach the mouth of the harbor while waiting in the shade of this great tree for their beloved sailors to return home, or young lovers sneaking off into the night for a clandestine meeting under the banyan tree.
From these notions came pages of ideas and notes. Many years later, after stumbling upon these notes, I was inspired to pick up my guitar and this new song was born within a few minutes.
UNDER THE BANYAN TREE
(Tim Weed, Janine Bjornson)
lyrics
‘twas there we met
under the banyan tree
like yesterday
I can feel
your cool shade
soothe my body
oh woah mmmm
we fell in love
under the banyan tree
your loving arms
embrace me
you hold me swaying
in your breeze
oh whoa mmmm
we made our vows
under the banyan tree
we swore our hearts and souls to each
if ever we do part
right here, we’ll meet
oh whoa mmmm
when the south winds blow
I’ll return to the sea
we can rendez-vous
under the banyan tree
now I’ve grown old
under the banyan tree
though now you’re gone
I still feel
your warm breath
on my skin
oh whoa mmmm
someday I’ll be gone too
remember me
we can rendez-vous
under the banyan tree
